These Terms govern your use of clavissinica.com (the “Site”) and your purchase of any digital products on it. The Site is operated by Clavis Sinica Limited, a company registered in New Zealand (“we”, “us”, “our”). By using the Site or buying a product, you agree to these Terms.
1.Who we are

2.What we sell
We sell digital educational products about the Chinese writing system — character dictionaries, illustrated reference works, learning workbooks and related downloadable files (each, a “Product”). Products are delivered electronically; we do not ship physical goods.
3.Orders, prices and payment
- Prices appear on the relevant product page in the currency stated at checkout. Prices may change, but the price shown when you complete payment is the price for your order.
- Payments are processed securely by Stripe. We never see or store your full card details. Your use of Stripe is also subject to Stripe’s own terms.
- An order is accepted only once payment is confirmed. We may decline or cancel an order (with a full refund) if we suspect fraud, a pricing error, or a breach of these Terms.
4.Delivery
After successful payment, your Product is delivered automatically by email — as an attachment or a secure download link — to the address you give at checkout. Delivery is normally immediate. If it has not arrived within a reasonable time, check your spam folder and then contact us; we will resend it promptly.
5.Your licence to use the Product
On purchase we grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the Product for your own study, teaching or research. Unless we agree otherwise in writing, you may not:
- resell, sublicense, rent or redistribute the Product or any substantial part of it;
- publish it on a public website, file-sharing service or learning platform;
- remove or alter any copyright, watermark, attribution or seal it contains.
All intellectual property in the Products — the underlying character data, the 视觉检字法 (Visual Key Method), the 楚氏三书说 framework, the illustrations and the text — remains owned by Clavis Sinica Limited and its licensors. Buying a Product does not transfer ownership of any of it to you.
6.Refunds
Because our Products are digital and delivered immediately, specific cancellation and refund rules apply. They are set out in full in our Refund Policy, which forms part of these Terms.
7.Acceptable use
You agree not to misuse the Site — for example by attempting unauthorised access, interfering with its operation, scraping it at scale, or using it unlawfully.
8.Disclaimers and liability
Our Products are educational reference materials provided “as is”. We take great care over accuracy, but scholarship on the Chinese script involves interpretation, and we do not warrant that every entry is free of error or fit for a particular purpose.
Nothing here limits rights you have under the New Zealand Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or other consumer law that cannot be excluded. Subject to that, and to the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability to you for any claim connected with a Product is limited to the amount you paid for that Product.
9.Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms. The version in force is the one published here, with the date above. Continued use of the Site after a change means you accept the updated Terms.
10.Governing law
These Terms are governed by New Zealand law, and the New Zealand courts have non-exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute.
